  • Sailing ships have been using wind power for about 5500 years
  • The first practical windmills were built in Sistan, Afghanistan in the 7th century
  • Windmills were used extensively in Europe by the 1880s
  • The modern wind turbine was developed in the 1980s

Expert summary

Wind energy is the conversion of wind power into a useful form such as electricity, using wind turbines. The total capacity of wind-powered generators has reached 94.1 gigawatts by the end of 2007. Wind produces only about 1 % of worldwide electricity use. Wind power generation has increased more than fivefold between 2000 and 2007. Denmark is the country that makes maximum use of wind power, with wind power constituting 19 % of overall energy production. Spain and Portugal wind power provides 9 % each of total power generation. In order to generate electricity from wind, large scale wind farms are connected to electrical grids. In windmills, wind energy is used directly as mechanical energy.

Wind Energy - NREL National Renewable Energy Laboratory
    NREL National Renewable Energy Laboratory
All markets for wind turbines require an estimate of how much wind energy is available at potential development sites. Correct estimation of the energy available in the wind can make or break the economics of wind farm development. Wind maps developed in the late '70s and early '80s provided reasonable estimates of areas in which good wind resources could be found. But new tools and new data available from satellites and new sensing devices now allow researchers to create even more accurate and detailed wind maps of the world.

Wind Energy - Wind Power-An Illustrated History of Wind Power Development
Wind Power-An Illustrated History of Wind Power Development
The historical and technical information in this section is derived from many sources. Information on developments since 1975 is based primarily on my personal experience with the U.S. Federal Wind Energy Program, my extensive reading (and editing) of wind energy journals and research reports over the last 25 years, my conversations with wind energy researchers, interactions with members of the wind energy community, and my personal view of wind power developments and of the wind industry. Opinions expressed here are my own, of course. --DMD

WInd Energy Basics : A Guide to small and micro wind systems
I'm sure this is a wonderful book. However, I, rather ignorantly, was expecting "small" and "micro" to actually mean small and micro! These are still huge systems on towers three times the height of a house! I'm glad it was just a library book, because I feel the title doesn't accurately describe the book.
